Lifeguard Training

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatics emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.

Interested in becoming a Lifeguard or have you recently taken your Lifeguard Training certification class? Owatonna Parks and Recreation offers up to $150 reimbursement if you become a certified American Red Cross Lifeguard and work for the city. Contact Parks and Recreation for more information.

March 2020 Class (Blended Learning-Full Lifeguard Course)

Fee: $185 (no refund will be issued if you do not pass)

Lifeguard Training Pre-requisites

Make sure you practice and prepare these skills. Being able to complete these skills is required to pass the class. Must be at least 15 years of age by the end of the course. You will not receive a refund if you do not complete or pass the class.

  • Swim 300 yards continuously (non-stop) performing either front crawl or breaststroke.
  • Swim 40 yards, pick up 10 pound brick from 10 feet of water and return it back 40 yards using only a kick, holding brick with 2 hands on the chest.

Lifeguard Training Review Courses

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Review Course is to review all lifeguard training skills including but not limited to the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatics emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. This course if for currently certified lifeguards set to expire.

Prerequisites:

  1. Must be a current Red Cross Certified Lifeguard or expired no more than 30 days after your expiration date.
  2. Swim 300 yds continuously (crawl & breaststroke)
  3. Swim 40 yds with a 10-pound brick, retrieving it from 10 feet of water, using only a kick, holding brick with 2 hands on the chest.
  4. You must attend all classes to pass.
  5. No refund will be issued if you do not pass.
