IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Works under the general guidance and direction of the Technology Coordinator.

DIRECTION OF OTHERS: Supervises none.

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Mimimum: Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field with two years of experience in a comparable position of IT support or the equivalent combination of technical education and experience. A+ Certified Computer Service Technician. Valid Minnesota driver’s license.

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree (BS, BA) in computer science or related field and five years experience in IT support. Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer or equivalent certification. Municipal, county or other local government IT experience.

 

NATURE OF WORK:

This is skilled technical work, with specialization in computer and a variety of other hardware, software and networks. Work may include assisting or serving as temporary backup for other staff above this classification. Work includes responsibility for a variety of tasks, most of which require exercise of individual judgment and the use of knowledge gained through training and experience. Work requires learning and using complex computer programs. Incumbent understands the overall services for the City and has a strong working knowledge of the policies and procedures related to the area of responsibility. Continuing education and continuing training are required.

WORK PERFORMED/AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintains LAN, WAN and telecommunication networks
Troubleshoots any networking problems with data connections, cabling, equipment etc.
Configures networking equipment such as routers, switches, controllers, bridges, wireless access points, servers, and personal computers
Monitors employee and public computer needs.
Learns, installs, configures, and troubleshoots broad range of software systems for various departments of the City of Owatonna: Administration, Library, Public Safety, Engineering, etc.

Serves as troubleshooter for public-use computers, and SELCO library system computers
Works with the appropriate vendors as necessary to solve problems
Follows up on problems to ensure they are resolved in a timely manner to the satisfaction of employees and public users
Works collaboratively within and across organizational boundaries to achieve common goals

PLANNING:

In conjunction with the Technology Coordinator plans network upgrades, expansion and new networks.
Evaluates, recommends and implements new networking technologies when appropriate.
Keeps current on network, hardware and software issues through journals and other media.

 

CONTRIBUTE TO IT INNOVATION:

Works with IT supervisor and city staff to discover solutions

Research, implement methods to improve performance and utilization of IT resources.

Maintain currency with industry changes. Recommend implementation.

Address end-user technology needs.

 

MAINTAINS EQUIPMENT:

Repairs or replaces faulty equipment
Maintains hardware and software inventory records
Installs new hardware and software
Monitors system performance of the public and City local area networks, and WAN systems
Maintains computer rooms and ensures security of confidential programs and materials.
Monitors and installs current patches and updates to equipment and software systems.
Coordinates daily backups
Completes other duties as assigned

EXTENT AND TYPE OF INTERACTION WITH PUBLIC:

Ability to assist and to work effectively with customers with courtesy and discretion.

EQUIPMENT AND TOOL OPERATION:

Employee must be capable of operating miscellaneous tools and office equipment relative to this position which shall include, but may not be limited to: computers, copiers, FAX machines, calculators, audiovisual equipment, and public address systems.

HOURS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

I. Hours may vary, but generally 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. This is an exempt position and does not accrue overtime. Work schedules (hours and days) and location are subject to change based on department needs. Occasional evening, weekend, holiday and on-call work is required.

III. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts or in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals.
