Welcome to Owatonna Parks and Recreation Winter 2017-2018

We sure had beautiful fall!   As I’m writing this, parks and trails are being heavily used, and the maintenance crew is comfortably working outdoors.  This is a great time to get families, neighbors, friends and community members outside to exercise, play, relax and interact with each other and nature.  I certainly hope you have a chance to get out and enjoy your parks and programs.

This brochure marks the fourth year of offering four brochures per year.  We went to four issues so you can have more timely and accurate information.  In the past, the winter issue came out late September, which was quite early, so we made adjustments have this issue released in November to coordinate better with winter activities.

In this brochure, you will find popular returning programs, new and improved, and programs such as the Junior Lifeguard Class and Winter Weekend Out!  The newly paved North Straight River Parkway with the Wildung/Ihlenfeld and the Lange Woods Trails and is now open.  Look for a grand opening in early 2018.  Also, the Archery Range on Elm is open from sunrise to sunset.  If you ever have a suggestion for a program, please let us know.

To continue to give you more information and to communicate better, we offer many options for you to receive the latest news on upcoming events and activities.  1) Visit our website, http://ci.owatonna.mn.us/parksrecreation (where you’ll find everything).  2)  Like and follow our Facebook pages.  3) Follow us on Instagram.  4) Sign-up for monthly newsletters and mass e-mails (contact us if you’re not receiving them.  5) Read school flyers sent out to all kids in grades K-6.  6) Find promotional flyers at area businesses.  7) Catch news releases in the local paper and on local radio stations.  If you have a suggestion to better our communication, let us know!

Parks and Recreation are vitally important to establishing and maintaining the quality of life in a community, ensuring the health of family and youth, and contributing to the economic and environmental well-being of a community.  Research has clearly shown that Parks and Recreation helps reduce obesity, depression and crime, all while building stewardship, cultural diversity, economic development, alternative transportation and academic success.  No community can pride themselves on their quality of life, promote themselves as a desirable location for businesses to relocate, or maintain they are environmental stewards of their natural resources, without having a robust, active system of parks and recreation programs for public use and enjoyment.  Your Owatonna Parks and Recreation Department isproud of this, and to the best of our ability, we will continue to provide quality service for the citizens of Owatonna.

Make time to take advantage of your parks, trails, facilities and programs year-round.

“The Benefits are Endless” as “Your Best Investment” is your Parks and Recreation Department!
