Technology Coordinator

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Bachelor's Degree (BA) in computer science or related field with one year of experience in a comparable position of computer/system support or the equivalent combination of technical education and experience.

NATURE OF WORK: This is skilled technical work, with specialization in computer hardware, software and networks. Work may include assisting or serving as temporary backup for other staff above this classification. Work includes responsibility for a variety of tasks, most of which require exercise of individual judgment and the use of knowledge gained through training and experience. Work requires learning and using complex computer programs. Incumbent understands the overall services for the City and has a strong working knowledge of the policies and procedures related to the area of responsibility..

WORK PERFORMED/AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintains LAN and WAN communication networks:
    1. Troubleshoots any networking problems with data connections, cabling, etc.
    2. Configures LAN and WAN equipment such as controllers, bridges, modems and PC's.
    3. Monitors employee and public computer needs.
  2. Serves as troubleshooter for problems on the local area networks, public-use computers, internet computers and SELCO library system computers:
    1. Investigates and resolves problems with hardware and/or software.
    2. Works with the appropriate vendors as necessary to solve problems.
    3. Follows up on problems to make sure they are resolved in a timely manner to the satisfaction of patrons and staff.
  3. Planning:
    1. In conjunction with the Assistant City Administrator and department directors plans network upgrades, expansion and new networks..
    2. Evaluates, recommends and implements new networking technologies when appropriate.
    3. Assists Departments in planning changes and additions in hardware and software.
    4. Keeps current on network, hardware and software issues through journals and other means of communication.
  4. Maintains Equipment:
    1. Replaces faulty equipment.
    2. Sends equipment in for repair, or repairs in-house.
    3. Maintains hardware and software inventory records.
    4. Installs new hardware and software.
    5. Monitors system performance of the public and City local area networks, and WAN systems.
    6. Maintains computer rooms and ensures security of confidential programs and materials.
    7. Installs software updates and hardware upgrades.
    8. Orders new equipment.
    9. Coordinates daily backups.
    10. Completes other duties as assigned.
  5. Acts as liaison between the City and outside organizations, attending appropriate meetings as necessary.

EXTENT AND TYPE OF INTERACTION WITH PUBLIC: Frequent contact with the public as computer/software troubleshooter, and as computer services specialist.

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND REGISTRATIONS:
I. Must possess valid Minnesota driver's license.
II. Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer.
III. A+ Certified Computer Service Technician.

EQUIPMENT AND TOOL OPERATION: Employee must be capable of operating miscellaneous tools and office equipment relative to this position which shall include, but may not be limited to: computers, copiers, FAX machines, calculators, audiovisual equipment, public address system.

HOURS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. The normal workday shall be eight (8) hours and the normal work week shall be forty (40) hours.
  2. Indoor working environment with frequent contact with the general public.

In compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act the following represents the Physical and Environmental Demands: This position requires an equal amount of time spent standing, walking, and sitting. Lifting, pushing/pulling, or carrying of objects weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds is sometimes required, with a maximum of forty (40) pounds infrequently required. Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, and bending are sometimes required. Repetitive movements of the hands are sometimes required. Audio, visual, and verbal functions are essential functions to performing this position. The majority of the workday is spent indoors.
