Group Swimming Lessons (Registration opens 3/19)
Group Swimming Lessons are back for the Spring Swim Lessons session!  After navigating Executive Orders and the COVID-19 climate, we are now able to bring back all levels of group lessons.  Registration for all classes opened on Friday, March 19.  All classes are 5 days for $42.00.

Covid-19 Guidelines

  • All classes levels 3 and under require a parent with the student at all times
  • Mask are required everywhere but in the water.
  • Social distancing between families is required.
  • Levels 3-5: 5 students per class
  • Levels Parent Child-Level 2: 4 students per class
  • Review all COVID-19 guidelines on website before registering

New Tennis Pro
Join us in welcoming our new Tennis Pro Contractor, Matt Hokanson, who will be starting with the city on April 1st.

Matt is a Tennis Professional who has been coaching tennis since the age of 15 in his hometown of Bemidji, Minnesota.  This past fall, he served as the Assistant Varsity Tennis Coach for the Bemidji High School Girls Tennis team who went on to win the Section 8AA Section Championship.

Growing up, Matt was a two-sport athlete, playing football and tennis. As a tennis player, he was a 5-year Varsity Tennis player at Bemidji High School. While on the varsity tennis team, he played #1 Singles his Sophomore through Senior years.  He also played numerous 16U & 18U tournaments in the USTA Northern Junior system.  He bounced between a 1-2 star recruit in high school and finished ranked as the #744 ranked player in the United States and #20 in Minnesota for the 2015 class.

He went on to play Division I college tennis in the Big Sky Conference at The University of North Dakota (2015-2018), competing in #6-7 Singles, and #2-3 Doubles. He was selected as UND Men’s Tennis Team Captain for the 2017-2018 season, was a Student Athlete Advisory Committee representative for UND Men’s Tennis and was named to the UND Athletic Academic Honor Roll each year on the team. For the 2018-2019 season, Matt served as the Volunteer Assistant Tennis Coach for the University of North Dakota Men’s and Women’s tennis programs.

After graduating from UND with a degree in Communication, Matt played a 5th-year of tennis as a Graduate Transfer at Division II Augustana University (2019-2020).  While at AU, he started a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration and is now finishing his Master’s Degree online through Minnesota State University, Mankato in Sport Management.

In his free time, Matt enjoys golfing, playing in tennis tournaments and fishing.  He is excited for this opportunity to grow tennis in Owatonna and the surrounding communities for players of all ages and abilities.

Junior Tennis Spring Lessons (Registration Now Open)

With our new Tennis Pro Matt Hokanson joining the city as a contractor, the Junior Tennis program is back with lessons starting the week of April 5.

  • Spring Junior Programming (Ages 5-18)
  • Spring Session: Week of April 5 - Week of May 24 (8 weeks)
    • Make up week in case of class cancellation: June 1-5

Shooting Stars (Red Ball)

  • Ages 5-8
  • Mon & Thurs (Max of 6 kids per session)
  • 5:00-5:30pm
  • Cost: $64 for 1 day/week; $105 for 2 days/week
  • DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for beginning tennis players from ages 5-8. In this course, the focus will be on learning how to track and make contact with the tennis ball. Players will also learn how to properly hold the tennis racquet & we will begin to develop their groundstrokes through various drills and games!  Red tennis balls are 75% slower than a normal yellow tennis ball.

Young Stars (Orange Ball)

  • Mondays & Wednesdays (Max of 6 per session)
  • 5:40-6:40pm
  • Cost: $80 for 1 day/week, $144 for 2 days/week
  • DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for players ages 7-10 who have completed Red Ball classes or have at least 1-2 years of playing experience. In this course, the focus will be on developing groundstrokes, learning how to hit with topspin, and the serve and serve return is introduced. Players at this stage will use the shortened court w/ a regular tennis net.  Orange Tennis Balls are 50% slower than a normal yellow tennis ball.

Stars (Green Dot)

  • Wednesdays & Sundays (Max of 8 per group)
  • 4:30-5:30pm
  • Cost: $95 for 1 day/week. $165 for 2 days/week
  • DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for players ages 10-12 who have completed Red & Orange Ball training, and have mastered the basic strokes in tennis. In this course, players will further develop these strokes and begin to play against one another. Players use the entire court at this stage.  Green Dot Tennis Balls are 25% slower than a normal yellow tennis ball.

Star Academy Middle School & Intermediate

  • Sundays (1:00-2:30pm) & Tuesdays (6:15-7:45pm) (Max of 8 per group)
  • Cost: $160 for 1 day/ week, $275 for 2 days/week
  • DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for players ages 11-18 who have mastered the basic strokes of tennis and are in-between starting middle school tennis all the way through high school JV. In this course, players will further develop their strokes and learn more about tennis strategy through drilling, playing games, and competition between one another.  A Regular Yellow Tennis Ball will be used on a full tennis court.

Star Academy Advanced Girls (Yellow, 2 Courts)

  • Sundays & Thursdays (Max of 8 per group)
  • 6:15-7:45pm
  • Cost: $160 1 day/ week, $275 2 days/week
  • DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for players who have High School Varsity Experience. This is intended for players who have been playing at a competitive level through high school tennis or USTA tournament competition beyond 12U. In this course, players will be developing more advanced strokes, learning advanced strategies, and preparing for competitions and college tennis preparation.  A Regular Yellow Tennis Ball will be used on a full tennis court.

Lifeguard Training (Registration Now Open)

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatics emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. Water Aerobics

Water Aerobics classes continue to be offered at the Tennis & Fitness Center Pool.  Registration periods open every other week for the upcoming 2 weeks classes.  Registration for the March 29-April 1 and April 5-April 8 began Thursday, March 18.  Registration can be made over the phone by calling 507-774-7105 or by registering online.

Cost: 3 day class $15.00 per week; 2 day class $10.00 per week
