Spring Happenings

Spring is here! Owatonna Parks and Recreation has a lot going on. Look below for more information on specific programs and visit our website for more information:

Therapeutic Recreation
TR weekly programing is back! It will look a little different. We will be meeting one time a week on Wednesdays 2 times a month. The time also changed we will meet from 4:30-5:30pm at West Hills Social Commons. Masks must be worn at all times and pre-registration is required. For more information please call Dani Bakken at 507-774-7110.

West Hills Social Commons
West Hills Social Commons is open! The Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00am-4:00pm. We have a limited amount of programming and pre-registration is required. Please check the newsletter for programming for the week. Trips are going to continue to be on hold.

Water Aerobics
Water Aerobics classes continue to be offered at the Tennis & Fitness Center Pool. Registration periods open every other week for the upcoming 2 weeks classes. Registration for the April 12-15 and April 19-April 22 began Thursday, April 1st at 7:00am. Registration can be made over the phone by calling 507-774-7105 or by registering online.

Cost: 3 day class $15.00 per week; 2 day class $10.00 per week

Classes Available: (5 Shallow Water Spots and 2 Deep water spots are available per class period)

Lifeguard Training (Registration Now Open)
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatics emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.   • Class 1: April 24-27 (24th 8:00am-3:30pm, 25th 8:00am-3:30pm, 27th 7:00pm-9:30pm)
  • Class 2: May 8-11 (8th 8:00am-3:30pm, 9th 8:00am-3:30pm, 11th 7:00pm-9:30pm)
  • Class 3: June 14th-18th (All days 8:00am-1:00pm
Junior Tennis Spring Lessons (Registration Now Open)
With our new Tennis Pro Matt Hokanson joining the city as a contractor, the Junior Tennis program is back with lessons starting the week of April 5.

  • Spring Junior Programming (Ages 5-18)
  • Spring Session: Week of April 5 - Week of May 24 (8 weeks)
    • Make up week in case of class cancellation: June 1-5

Shooting Stars (Red Ball)

  • Ages 5-8
  • Mon & Thurs (Max of 6 kids per session)
  • 5:00-5:30pm
  • Cost: $64 for 1 day/week; $105 for 2 days/week
  • DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for beginning tennis players from ages 5-8. In this course, the focus will be on learning how to track and make contact with the tennis ball. Players will also learn how to properly hold the tennis racquet & we will begin to develop their groundstrokes through various drills and games!  Red tennis balls are 75% slower than a normal yellow tennis ball.

Young Stars (Orange Ball)

  • Mondays & Wednesdays (Max of 6 per session)
  • 5:40-6:40pm
  • Cost: $80 for 1 day/week, $144 for 2 days/week
  • DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for players ages 7-10 who have completed Red Ball classes or have at least 1-2 years of playing experience. In this course, the focus will be on developing groundstrokes, learning how to hit with topspin, and the serve and serve return is introduced. Players at this stage will use the shortened court w/ a regular tennis net.  Orange Tennis Balls are 50% slower than a normal yellow tennis ball.

Stars (Green Dot)

  • Wednesdays & Sundays (Max of 8 per group)
  • 4:30-5:30pm
  • Cost: $95 for 1 day/week. $165 for 2 days/week
  • DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for players ages 10-12 who have completed Red & Orange Ball training, and have mastered the basic strokes in tennis. In this course, players will further develop these strokes and begin to play against one another. Players use the entire court at this stage.  Green Dot Tennis Balls are 25% slower than a normal yellow tennis ball.

Star Academy Middle School & Intermediate

  • Sundays (1:00-2:30pm) & Tuesdays (6:15-7:45pm) (Max of 8 per group)
  • Cost: $160 for 1 day/ week, $275 for 2 days/week
  • DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for players ages 11-18 who have mastered the basic strokes of tennis and are in-between starting middle school tennis all the way through high school JV. In this course, players will further develop their strokes and learn more about tennis strategy through drilling, playing games, and competition between one another.  A Regular Yellow Tennis Ball will be used on a full tennis court.

Star Academy Advanced Girls (Yellow, 2 Courts)

  • Sundays & Thursdays (Max of 8 per group)
  • 6:15-7:45pm
  • Cost: $160 1 day/ week, $275 2 days/week
  • DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for players who have High School Varsity Experience. This is intended for players who have been playing at a competitive level through high school tennis or USTA tournament competition beyond 12U. In this course, players will be developing more advanced strokes, learning advanced strategies, and preparing for competitions and college tennis preparation.  A Regular Yellow Tennis Ball will be used on a full tennis court.

The Golf course is now open! The club house is open daily at 9:00am and membership sales are now available! Please check the Brooktree website for more information.

Owatonna Park and Recreation Adopt-a-Park
Parks and Recreation has a new volunteer opportunity for you! Volunteering for the Adopt-A- Park is a chance to assist the Parks Department to maintain a clean, beautiful area and communicate any issues associated with a specific park, trail or open space. River Springs Water Park
Season Passes Season passes can be purchased at the Parks and Recreation office as well as at River Springs during the Water Park season. An ID card will be issued to you for unlimited access during lap swim, water walking, morning and afternoon water aerobics, tiny tot time, and open swim.

Individual Season Pass:$85.00 Family Season Pass: Includes 3 people $180.00 ($20.00 for each additional person)

Family Season Pass Requirements

  • A household consisting of up to 2 adults (parents or legal guardians only) and their dependent children.
  • Family members must all live in the same household
  • Only those individuals in the immediate family can be included on the family season pass.
  • Dependents include children 22 years old and under if, they are a full time student in college; otherwise, an individual season pass is required. (College ID will be needed for proof of enrollment)
